Viveca Stone | | I found a little guy running around yesterday in an anxious panic. Collar, no tags and not neutered. Yippee. So today I checked with my shelter, placed a classified ad and am listening to incessant, anxious whining and yipping. Whether he is in the room with me or next door he is stressed. Poor little guy. Poor me! I am going to have to buy the Cesar Millan's DVDs. I really don't know how to work with this high anxiety. Sigh. Anyone have any bright ideas or success "how tos" to share?Viveca P.S. Please make sure your dog, your friend's and family's dogs have collars with tags. We all think "it" will never happen to us. With some 10 million lost a year, the odds are good it could.

Thank you so much for helping this doggie. I hope his parents will show up! Several times I've experienced the escape of a house cat and one of the things I did was take a flyer to each home in my neighborhood. Exhausting, but worth it.
I do know of many positive motivated dog trainers who are not at all happy with Ceasar Milan's methods. You may wish to try Bach's Rescue Remedy and also there's something called 'Calm Forte' -- both from the health food store. I love the Tillington Touch approach and I believe there are instruction DVDs and/or tapes available on her web site. It's really easy to learn the technique and the results are amazing. The tape I have includes footage of a TTouch workshop and one of the dogs was a terrified Greyhound, just off the track -- the transformation was just amazing.

The website also directs people to practioners in their area - I found someone in Richmond - close enough for me.
The little guy is doing better. I did remember one thing Cesar said that is helping. He said to never touch or make eye contact with a dog that is anxious but to stroke them gently when they are calm. So -- all day long I've been waiting for him to be calm then stroking him gently and just breathing calmly. (I took some of that rescue remedy!)
Right now he is lying relaxed by my side. Little by little ...
I am also interested in that touch method for my volunteer work on the SPCA.
I don't have a lot of time w/ those dogs - 1x week - and I would love to be of more service to them in that time ...

This little dog must have been through a pretty major trauma. There's a chance he's been microchipped. Though I was surprised to learn that when the owner of a microchipped dog is contacted, if they don't bother to reply or take action, that's that. The dog is no longer theirs. This happened to someone I heard about who found a lost Husky who had been microchipped and the people never followed through. She kept the dog.Private Reply to Ann Rader |

Viveca Stone | | Update! Albert, whose real name is Buster, went home last night. All is well that ends well. I did have a heart wrenching conversation with a woman who called hoping that he was her lost dog. I still feel her pain. Moral to this story is please - everyone - tap or microchip your pets (cats too.) Best plan is to do both. The micro chip is good but it doesn't make it easy to make that quick call. BTW - April 5th is "Everyday is Tag Day" - sponsored by the American Humane Association. April 20th-April 26th is National Pet ID Week Have a great weekend everyone! Viveca

I agree that microchips are important -- imagine, if a pet ends up at a shelter (and a dog likely will) and the owner doesn't show up -- after 5 days the dog can be adopted out! I heard of a family that this happened to and the new adoptees refused to return their dog to them!
There was some controversy about the chips causing cancer at the site, but I beleive that the actuality of that is quite rare -- it's worth a small risk, in my opinion.

Viveca Stone | | UPDATE! I wonder if you will be surprised to find out that little Albert, as he has come to be called, is now officially our dog! Long story short - he was returned home then escaped again. His owners were never home and decided to just let us adopt him. Over the past month he has calmed down - stopped peeing everywhere and become a beloved member of our household! He is also a great workout buddy for Velvet our 12 year old Rot/Shep/Lab and Gengus Kitty who needs to shed more than a few pounds ... He keeps everyone on the move! All is well that ends so well! Viveca P.S. We call him Albert 'cause he looks like Albert Einstein with his hair sticking out over here and over there!

Glad you've got Mr. Einstein under your roof and under your control. I can't imagine when pet owners don't take that responsibiity seriously! I'm sure you'll find him to be a great little companion as you continue to work with him.
